Managed Service for OpenSearch works only with manufacturer-supported OpenSearch versions. For information about the EOL (end of life) for individual versions, see the vendor's maintenance tables.

Managed Service for OpenSearch uses two types of OpenSearch versions:

  • Major versions.

Two major versions are supported: the current and the previous one. When a new major version is released in Managed Service for OpenSearch, the oldest available major version support is discontinued.

The only exception is major version 1, which is not supported. Until major version 3 is released, only major version 2 is supported.

  • Minor versions.

The latest OpenSearch minor version is supported for each available major version. When a new minor OpenSearch version is released in Managed Service for OpenSearch, support for the previous minor version is discontinued.

Warning

  • For clusters with a deprecated OpenSearch version, there is no option to create new hosts or restore from backups.
  • Clusters running on an deprecated OpenSearch version will be automatically updated according to the update policy.

Major versions
Minor versions.

A Managed Service for OpenSearch cluster running a discontinued OpenSearch version is updated to the next major version (listed as LTS).

A Managed Service for OpenSearch cluster running on an obsolete OpenSearch version will be upgraded to either the nearest major version (marked as LTS), if available, or the latest minor version.

The owner of the affected clusters receives an email notification on the expected automatic update. When your OpenSearch version approaches its EOL, we recommend that you update the cluster to a newer version.
