Migrating databases from Managed Service for MySQL® to Yandex Object Storage
With Data Transfer, you can transfer data from a Managed Service for MySQL® source cluster to Yandex Object Storage object storage.
To transfer data:
If you no longer need the resources you created, delete them.
Getting started
Prepare the infrastructure:
- Create a Managed Service for MySQL® source cluster with any suitable configuration.
- Create a bucket in Yandex Object Storage.

If you do not have Terraform yet, install it.

Get the authentication credentials. You can add them to environment variables or specify them later in the provider configuration file.

Configure and initialize a provider. There is no need to create a provider configuration file manually, you can download it
. -
Place the configuration file in a separate working directory and specify the parameter values. If you did not add the authentication credentials to environment variables, specify them in the configuration file.

Download the data-transfer-mmy-objs.tf
configuration file to the same working directory.This file describes:
- Network.
- Subnet.
- Security group and the rule required to connect to a Managed Service for MySQL® cluster.
- Managed Service for MySQL® source cluster.
- Service account with the
editor
,storage.editor
, andstorage.uploader
roles. - Object Storage bucket.
- Source endpoint.
- Transfer.

Specify in the
data-transfer-mmy-objs.tf
file:-
folder_id
: ID of the folder to create resources in. -
sa_name
: Name of the service account to create a bucket in and use in the target endpoint. -
bucket_name
: Object Storage bucket name. -
The Managed Service for MySQL® source cluster parameters that will also be used as the source endpoint parameters:
source_mysql_version
: MySQL® version.source_db_name
: Database name.source_user
andsource_password
: Database owner username and password.

: Set0
to ensure that no transfer is created before creating a target endpoint manually.

Make sure the Terraform configuration files are correct using this command:
terraform validate
If there are any errors in the configuration files, Terraform will point them out.

Create the required infrastructure:

Run the command to view planned changes:
terraform plan
If the resource configuration descriptions are correct, the terminal will display a list of the resources to modify and their parameters. This is a test step. No resources are updated.

If you are happy with the planned changes, apply them:

Run the command:
terraform apply

Confirm the update of resources.
-
Wait for the operation to complete.

All the required resources will be created in the specified folder. You can check resource availability and their settings in the management console
. -
Prepare the source cluster

If you created the infrastructure manually, prepare the source cluster.

Add test data to the database. As an example, we'll use a table with information transmitted by car sensors.
Create a table:
CREATE TABLE measurements ( device_id varchar(200) NOT NULL, datetime timestamp NOT NULL, latitude real NOT NULL, longitude real NOT NULL, altitude real NOT NULL, speed real NOT NULL, battery_voltage real, cabin_temperature real NOT NULL, fuel_level real, PRIMARY KEY (device_id) );
Populate the table with data:

Prepare and activate the transfer

.Select a source cluster from the list and specify its connection settings.

(Optional) Included tables, Excluded tables: Regular expressions for the tables to include in and exclude from the transfer.

Create a transfer of the Snapshot type that will use the created endpoints.

Activate your transfer.

In the
data-transfer-mmy-objs.tf
file, specify the variables:target_endpoint_id
: ID of the target endpoint.transfer_enabled
: Set to1
to enable transfer creation.- (Optional)
include_tables_regex
,exclude_tables_regex
: Regular expressions for the tables to be transferred and those not to be transferred.

Make sure the Terraform configuration files are correct using this command:
terraform validate
If there are any errors in the configuration files, Terraform will point them out.

Create the required infrastructure:

Run the command to view planned changes:
terraform plan
If the resource configuration descriptions are correct, the terminal will display a list of the resources to modify and their parameters. This is a test step. No resources are updated.

If you are happy with the planned changes, apply them:

Run the command:
terraform apply

Confirm the update of resources.
-
Wait for the operation to complete.
-
Once created, your transfer will be activated automatically.

Test the transfer

Wait for the transfer status to change to Completed.

Make sure the data has been moved from the Managed Service for MySQL® source cluster to the Object Storage bucket:
- In the management console
, select the folder where the bucket is located. - In the list of services, select Object Storage.
- Select the bucket from the list.
- Go to the Objects tab.
- Check that the Object Storage bucket contains the
measurements
folder with the<source_cluster_database_name>_measurements
object with the test data.

Delete the resources you created
Note
Before deleting the created resources, deactivate the transfer.
Some resources are not free of charge. To avoid paying for them, delete the resources you no longer need:
Delete the other resources depending on how they were created:
- Delete the source endpoint.
- Delete the Object Storage bucket.
- Delete the Managed Service for MySQL® cluster.
- If you created a service account together with the target endpoint, delete it.

In the terminal window, go to the directory containing the infrastructure plan.

Delete the
data-transfer-mmy-objs.tf
configuration file. -
Make sure the Terraform configuration files are correct using this command:
terraform validate
If there are any errors in the configuration files, Terraform will point them out.

Confirm updating the resources.

Run the command to view planned changes:
terraform plan
If the resource configuration descriptions are correct, the terminal will display a list of the resources to modify and their parameters. This is a test step. No resources are updated.

If you are happy with the planned changes, apply them:

Run the command:
terraform apply

Confirm the update of resources.

Wait for the operation to complete.

All the resources described in the
data-transfer-mmy-objs.tf
configuration file will be deleted. -
